Live Comment Preview - Wordpress and Dreamhost

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Many of the interesting techniques I’ve been seeing on other blogs, like AJAX comment submission, and live comment preview, are default features of the new K2 Beta theme. Unfortunately, when I switched to the new template the comment preview didn’t seem to be working. I tried downloading the files again, de-installing, re-installing, but the comment preview still wouldn’t work. I spent a while looking at support blogs, forums, and even the PHP code for the plugins themselves before I realized what was going wrong. I’m hoping that posting a brief explanation of the problem, and how to fix it, will be helpful for anyone else who runs into this issue…

Top 5 Posts at Design Meme

Happy Easter!

I thought today would be a good time to look back at some of the more popular posts from the past year. It’s both great inspiration to get the momentum going in posting new entries, as well as helping new readers get caught up with some of the more interesting entries in the archive.

Here are the 5 most popular posts from the last year.

  1. New Firefox Extension: X-Ray — My first extension has already been downloaded over 90,000 times!
  2. Top 5 Firefox Extensions for Web Designers — I’m always looking at these sorts of list on other people’s sites.
  3. Lowdown Plugin for Movable Type — A quiet and unassuming little plugin, still popular with visitors.
  4. 11 Essential Wordpress Plugins — I’ve since found quite a few more that I’d add to the list.
  5. 13 Spooktacular Free Movies — I’m really happy people are enjoying these films.

I should also mention that all the feedback I’ve received on these articles (and software) has been really great. In particular, I’m really happy to see so many people from outside Canada and North America visiting. I only wish I could read all the languages on the sites that are linking here!

Blog Kick Start

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

This weekend we drove up north to visit my wife’s family for Easter. It was nice seeing everyone, but the drive was very long. On the bright side, that gave Catherine and I a chance to talk about all sorts of things—her Scrap-booking party, renovations we’d like to make on our house, the new baby we’re expecting, and even the fact I haven’t updated my blog for a while.

It’s one of those things that I keep stopping and starting. I’ll post frequently for a few weeks, only to let things slide for a while and drift into “radio silence” for a bit. The more time goes by and I haven’t made a new post, the more I feel like I need something significant to write about before I can get started again. That’s something I really need to change.

So—here we are! Resuming our regular broadcast schedule. For real. Honest.

Guelph Candidates Online

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

As we wait to see which of Guelph’s candidates is elected to represent us in Parliament, I thought I’d take a moment to review how well they did using the web for their campaigns. I was surprised to see how few of the candidates thought to run their own campaign blog, and even more surprised to see a few people either had very poorly designed websites—or worse yet, no website at all! Particularly for the smaller parties, it’s quite astounding that they didn’t try and take advantage of the web a bit better.

Here’s my impression of how the candidates did:

Candidate’s Blog

  1. Phil Allt—NDP
  2. Mike Nagy—Green
  3. Brent Barr—Conservative

Candidates who didn’t think to have a blog…

  • Brenda Chamberlain—Liberal
  • Scott Gilbert—Communist
  • Peter Ellis—Christian Heritage
  • Manuel Couto—Communist (Lenninist / Marxist)

Candidate’s Website

  1. Mike Nagy—Green
  2. Phil Allt—NDP
  3. Brent Barr—Conservative
  4. Scott Gilbert—Communist
  5. Brenda Chamberlain—Liberal

Candidates who didn’t think to even bother with their own website…

  • Peter Ellis—Christian Heritage
  • Manuel Couto—Communist (Lenninist / Marxist)

It will be interesting to see how this compares to the number of votes each candidate receives.

Cat Can Cook . Com

Monday, January 16th, 2006

This past weekend I helped Catherine setup her new blog at CatCanCook.Com. She’s planning on writing about cooking, crafts, creative projects, and the trials and triumphs of motherhood.

Yesterday she posted her Awesome Banana Muffin Recipe which is both very easy and very delicious. While I might have thought to register StuartCan’tCook.com—this is a recipe even I could follow, and they really are awesome. Catherine is going to be posting a lot of different recipes, so I’m sure there will be ones for all levels of cooking ability.

If you’re looking for recipes, craft ideas, or resources for parenting, be sure to add Catherine’s Blog to your bookmarks.

13 Spooktacular Free Movies

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

John ‘the Cool Ghoul’ Zacherley is still going strong at 88, and updated his site with a message for the holidays:

...
It’s been busy for me. I spent some time digging up old relatives in Transylvania. It’s so difficult putting them back. They just don’t like to stay buried.
Then My Dear and I went on a second honeymoon to tour the pyramids of Egypt . . . from the inside. She wanted to see her mummy again, and, well, I’m too nice to tell her, “No.”
...

I never got to see Zacherley’s show on TV, but he collaborated with Rob Zombie on the Halloween Hootenanny CD—which remains one of my all time favourites.

I think it would crazy fun to host a monster chiller movie show, full of campy costumes and spooky old films. I have an second-hand tuxedo from when I hosted the screenings when I was in film school, and a box full of monster masks and halloween stuff. If I ever decide to try my hand at video podcasting, maybe I’ll do that. A monsterific version of RocketBoom. Until then, in honour of the coolness that is Zacherley, here are 13 spooktacular films you can download for free from archive.org. If you want to get them on DVD, the pictures will take you to Amazon.

Enjoy the show… whatever you are.
