The X-Ray extension, which lets you see the underlying tag structure of a webpage, has been updated to version 0.8. X-Ray is now compatible with both Firefox and the new Flock Browser which recently moved into public beta.

The new version of X-Ray adds support for displaying tags for table, tr, script and a few other elements! Tags will now show both ID and Class details if they exist. The update also improves compatibility with the new Professor X Extension—also available for both Firefox and Flock.

Professor X is the companion extension to X-Ray, and adds support for displaying tags within the head element of your document such as meta, title, style and link. Using both extensions gives you the best view of the structure of a page without viewing the source-code.

It seems my web host may not be serving up the X-Ray update.rdf file with the proper mime-types, and the .htaccess workaround doesn’t seem to be producing the desired effect—so it looks like people will need to manually update the extension by visiting the X-Ray download page.

Both X-Ray and Professor X have been submitted to addons.mozilla.org and will hopefully be available from there soon as well.

Next steps include trying to add support for the few remaining tags such as br and iframe that aren’t yet supported.

Thanks again to all the people who have downloaded X-Ray, emailed to say thanks or written something nice about it on their blog, and an extra big thanks to the people who helped support X-Ray development by making a small donation. It’s very appreciated! :-)
